Media reports indicate that the Dabolim airport in Goa will be partly closed due to repairs being undertaken. From Mid april 2015 to June 15, 2015, commercial flights from the airport will take off between 5 am to 1 pm during the day only and the airport will be closed for the rest of the day for repairs. The Dabolim airport is also used by the Indian Navy. Normally the airport will be closed for commercial flights between 8.30am to around 12.30 in the afternoon, when the indian navy will utilize it for the various activities.
Due to the change in timings of Dabolim airport, airlines have been forced to reschedule their flights to and from Goa airport to a very large extent. As the change in timings is major, many airlines have cancelled many of their flights to goa. This has increased the demand for the remaining flights to a very large extent.
Usually the early morning flight taking off at 4 am in the morning will be relatively empty as people find it difficult to get up early in the morning and find a suitable vehicle to take them to the airport. Earlier the airlines would refund their customers money if they missed their flight or adjust, now many airlines have changed their rules and the passenger will lose almost the entire ticket amount if they miss their flight. Now all the flights to goa are full and the airlines have hiked their fare to cater to increased demand, especially after 7 am in the morning .
Normally a flight to Mumbai will cost approximately Rs 3000-4000, yet today,the same flight on a weekend can cost Rs 15-20,000 . While wealthy people may be willing to spend a large amount on travel, others will prefer more inexpensive and uncomfortable alternatives. During the May 1 holiday weekend the flight ticket cost increased to Rs 40000+ , as a result of which many tourist who would otherwise fly to goa for the weekend preferred to travel to other destinations. Airfare trends from June 15, 2015 will be monitored closely.
